A Heartfelt Proposal at Zion National Park
Sarah & Nathan met on Hinge, dated for four years, and built the start of their lives together along the way—including adopting a dog, Vader. Their planned trip to Zion National Park came at a bittersweet time, as Vader had crossed the rainbow bridge a few days earlier. While they both mourned their pet, Sarah took the loss especially hard and decided to bring a stuffed Lamp Chop on the trip for comfort and as a reminder of Vader. Sarah & Nathan both looked forward to a getaway that would help them reconnect with the outdoors, appreciate nature’s beauty, and process their loss together.
Nathan also had an important question to ask… with Vader’s blessing, of course.
On the first night, as the couple settled in to watch the sun set over the canyon, Nathan offered to grab some water. Sarah described what happened next:
“When he came back out, I was watching a hummingbird zip around, and I heard him behind me say, “So uhhh,” so I turned around. There he was, with the ring box and the Lamb Chop. He told me he made sure to show Vader the ring before he passed and asked for his approval to marry me. It was the most perfect, memorable & private moment!”
Romantic Fall Wedding Details, Stationery, & Accessories
When it came time to start planning their wedding, the goal was simple: an intimate wedding that felt authentic, personal, and cozy. Sarah & Nathan chose an October wedding date and embraced a fall color palette, while also incorporating rich, dark hues and glowing candlelight for a moody, romantic atmosphere.
Their love of nature also shone through their wedding details, beginning with burgundy florals and winding leaf illustrations on their invitations. Floral and botanical motifs also appeared in Sarah’s jewelry from Powers Jewelry Designers, beaded into her bridal heels, and on a bow tie worn by the couple’s other dog, Asher, during a brief appearance at the ceremony.
Rather than relying on traditional fall motifs throughout the celebration, the couple carried their love of nature into smaller, personal details. Repeating botanical elements across stationery, accessories, and décor helped connect the design while leaving room for their individual personalities to shine.

Wedding Preparations, Fashion, & Private Vows
Located in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward, The Loft on Broadway is a beautiful example of an open-concept, industrial-chic venue that still feels warm and welcoming. Venue highlights include Cream City brick walls, warm wooden floors, ample lighting, and a prime location for guest accommodations.
Sarah prepared on-site, with hair and makeup by Lucent Sky Creations. While the wedding palette leaned into darker, saturated tones, Sarah’s bridal makeup stayed natural, with subtle, dimensional eyeshadow on her outer lid. Her hair was curled and pulled back into a twisted, half-up style, finished with a pop of color woven into floral clips placed around the side and back of her head.
She found her dream dress at Strike Bridal Bar. The ethereal, A-line gown layered lace and delicate tulle around the bodice, and cascaded elegantly down the skirt. An illusion deep V-neckline added a little drama, while romantic off-the-shoulder sleeves contrasted beautifully with the bride’s botanical tattoos.

Nathan and his groomsmen wore suits from Studio Suits, with Nathan in rich burgundy and his groomsmen wearing dark gray. Nathan wore a floral-patterned dress shirt, a burnt orange tie, brown dress shoes, a wooden floral boutonnière from Sola Wood Flowers, and a paperclip tie clip that showed his personality.
The groomsmen wore white dress shirts, wooden floral boutonnières, and ties that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses in burgundy, red, mauve, apricot, orange, and green. The mix of autumn colors gave the wedding party a coordinated look without requiring everyone to wear identical shades. Nathan’s floral shirt and wooden boutonnière also carried the botanical theme into his attire, complementing Sarah’s romantic gown and accessories.
Sarah & Nathan decided against a first look but still wanted to exchange private vows before the ceremony. They stood back-to-back, held hands, and read from their keepsake vow books, waiting to see one another until Sarah walked down the aisle.
Their approach offered a meaningful alternative to a traditional first look. Couples who want a private moment together without seeing each other before the ceremony can exchange vows back-to-back, hold hands around a doorway, or read letters separately. It’s a personal choice that can be incorporated into the wedding-day timeline with a little coordination between the photographer and venue team.

A Romantic, Candlelit Fall Wedding Ceremony at The Loft on Broadway
The couple exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony defined by glowing candles lining every row of chairs, a wooden backdrop, ample sunlight streaming through The Loft on Broadway’s many windows—and, most importantly, their love for one another, surrounded by their closest friends and family.
Sarah held a bouquet with charms of her late grandparents, and also a charm for Vader. For her, this was a way to keep them close and honor them, while still feeling private and authentic to herself.

Milwaukee Wedding Party Photos & Romantic Couple Portraits
Ampersand Photography had no shortage of photo backdrops throughout the day. They captured every scene with care, preserving all the big moments and small details that told Sarah & Nathan’s love story.
Familiar with Milwaukee, they knew the area and could scout unique locations that showcased the cityscape for champagne popping, plus nearby spots that paired industrial brick architecture with trees, late-season florals, and soft foliage for swoon-worthy couple portraits.

Moody Fall Wedding Reception Ideas & Personal Details
As the sun set, the lights came up, casting a cozy glow over Sarah & Nathan’s wedding reception. The couple added many personal details and fun guest experiences, including table numbers featuring illustrations from Jessica Roux’s Woodland Wardens Oracle Deck. Their table centerpieces featured stacked books, bud vases, glowing candles, and wreaths of greenery.
Additional experiences included a pet treat favor bar, a photo booth, glow sticks on the dance floor, an audio guestbook, and DJ services from Lucky Entertainment.
For couples interested in interactive wedding details, consider choosing experiences that reflect your shared interests. A favorite book collection, custom illustrations, or a guest activity connected to your pets can make the celebration feel distinctly yours without requiring every element to follow a theme.

Guests enjoyed a meal from Irene’s Catering before indulging in Sam’s Club desserts and ice cream from Purple Door Ice Cream. Sarah & Nathan’s wedding cake from Whisk Chick was a single-tier cake with a blush-colored frosted base and painted frosting florals and botanicals in green, yellow, and orange.

Wedding Planning Advice from Sarah & Nathan
Reflecting on their engagement all the way through their last dances, Sarah & Nathan were endlessly grateful for the dedication of their family, friends, and vendors in bringing their dream wedding to life. For couples currently in the wedding planning process, they suggest,
“…make a list of every card or gift received as you receive them. (From start to finish!) With all the registries and different ways to gift now, it’s hard to bounce around between them all to make sure you thank everyone. Keeping one ongoing list makes it easier to keep track & not miss anyone, and saves you a lot of time after the wedding when you’re writing your thank-yous!”
